Nakashima ousts defending champion de Minaur to reach Washington semis

Brandon Nakashima defeated top-seeded defending champion Alex de Minaur 7-6, 6-4 at the Washington Open to reach the semi-finals.

Nakashima, ranked 33rd, fired 31 winners and saved six of seven break points to improve to 3-1 against De Minaur.

Jessica Pegula, the women's top seed, beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 7-5 to reach her sixth WTA semi-final of the year.

Pegula, who won her first career WTA title at Washington in 2019, seeks her 12th career WTA crown and third of the year.

Nakashima will face the winner between Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen; Pegula will face the winner between Diana Shnaider and Liudmila Samsonova.
