Anna Bågenholm, a Swedish radiologist, survived 80 minutes trapped under river ice in Norway in May 1999.

Her body temperature fell to 13.7°C, one of the lowest ever recorded in a living adult, and her heart stopped for over an hour.

Cold water slowed her metabolism and protected her brain from irreversible damage.

Doctors at University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø used a heart-lung bypass machine to gradually rewarm her.

She returned to work as a doctor five months later, and her case changed understanding of hypothermia.
