Delhi govt to ensure treatment of those injured by pellet guns: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court directed the Delhi government to ensure medical treatment for protestors injured by pellet guns at Jantar Mantar.
The CJI-led bench of Justices Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi, and V Mohana issued the order in a suo motu matter related to the TN Godavarman Thirumulpad case.
The court noted that pellet gun use is allowed in exceptional circumstances under police rules unless the rules themselves are challenged.
The order follows a petition by Yashovardhan Azad seeking a ban on pellet guns and compensation for victims of the July 20 protest.
The court emphasized that peaceful protest is a constitutional right but excessive force by police and violence by demonstrators are both unacceptable.
