California is weighing state endangered-species protections for southern resident killer whales, a population of just over 70 animals threatened by noise, pollution and falling salmon prey

California is considering listing southern resident killer whales as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act, following a petition from the Orca Conservancy.

The population of southern resident killer whales is just over 70 individuals, threatened by declining Chinook salmon, vessel noise, and chemical contaminants.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife issued a report in April 2026 evaluating the petition and is now gathering public input on potential protections.

Washington and Oregon have already listed southern resident killer whales under their respective state endangered species laws.

The whales are currently listed as endangered under the U.S. federal Endangered Species Act since 2005.
