Karnataka schools introduce AI as vocational subject in classes 9-10, instead of third language

Karnataka's department of school education and literacy introduced AI as a vocational subject for classes 9 and 10 under NSQF, allowing students to opt for it instead of a third language.

AI will be introduced in 1,642 govt high schools, including 1,180 newly approved high schools, 381 NSQF schools, and 81 existing single-sector schools where subjects like beauty and wellness will be replaced.

Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK) will implement the program, aiming to equip students with 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, technical knowledge, and employability.

Each school will appoint one AI guest teacher for 2026-27 at Rs 20,000/month; eligible candidates need a degree or diploma in computer science/IT, one year work experience, and local language plus English proficiency.

The move drew opposition from the Karnataka State High School Hindi Teachers’ Association, but additional chief secretary Rashmi V Mahesh said AI is a future-aligned skill subject and third language will remain in lower classes.
