Rare camel breed faces extinction threat; conservation measures initiated

The Malvi camel breed, one of India's nine recognised camel breeds, faces extinction with only 102 animals remaining.

The National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC) has launched a scientific breeding programme, procuring 12 Malvi camels (3 males, 9 females) to preserve the breed.

The Malvi camel is known for its distinct white colour, is the smallest Indian camel breed, and yields 4-5 kg of milk per cycle.

The breed is primarily found in Madhya Pradesh's Malwa region and parts of Rajasthan, but declining utility and socio-economic changes have reduced its population.

The NRCC is collaborating with the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources and engaging livestock owners to promote conservation and awareness.
