Gangster Chhota Rajan gets 7 years in jail in fake passport case after 22-year legal battle

Chhota Rajan was sentenced to 7 years in jail by a special CBI court in Chennai for obtaining a passport under the fake identity 'Vijaya Kadam' using forged documents.

The CBI registered an FIR in 2002 and filed a chargesheet in 2004; the conviction ends a 22-year legal battle.

Rajan is currently lodged in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, serving multiple life sentences for other crimes.

In September 2025, the Supreme Court restored Rajan's life sentence in the 2001 murder of Mumbai hotelier Jaya Shetty, overturning a Bombay High Court suspension.
