Inside Tuvalu: This tiny island nation has one airline, and a threatened future

Tuvalu is one of the least visited countries, with Fiji Airways as the only scheduled airline connecting its capital Funafuti to Fiji.

The nation consists of nine coral atolls covering 26 square kilometers, home to under 11,000 people with a cash-based economy and recently installed ATMs.

Tuvalu's average elevation is only about two meters above sea level, making it highly vulnerable to sea level rise.

NASA's Sea Level Change Team projects at least 15 centimeters of sea level rise for Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji over the next 30 years, regardless of emissions changes.

The analysis, produced for the United Nations-backed Rising Nations Initiative, warns of worsening impacts from rising oceans, storms, and ocean variability.
