Fire damages furniture, records, computers at 102-year-old Byculla police station

A fire broke out at the 102-year-old Byculla police station in Mumbai on July 27, 2026, damaging the record room and computer room.

The fire was reported at 8:24 pm, classified as Level-1, and brought under control by 9:50 pm after 20 minutes of firefighting by Mumbai Fire Brigade using 4 fire engines and 3 water tankers.

No injuries were reported; the fire is prima facie attributed to a short circuit, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena.

The blaze spread rapidly due to the heritage building's wooden construction, burning physical files, paper registers, and digital records, causing significant damage to furniture and computers.

Senior Police Inspector Deepak Sawant was notified around 8:30 pm and arrived to find the fire brigade already on scene; damage assessment awaits safety clearance from fire officials.
