Mangaluru, India, has one of the highest per capita ice cream consumption rates at over 7 liters per year, far above the national average of 1.6 liters.

The region, including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, has produced nationally recognized ice cream brands such as Ideal, Hangyo, Naturals, and Polar Bear.

Ideal Ice Cream was founded in 1975 by S. Prabhakar Kamath in Mangaluru and became one of southern India's most recognized regional brands.

The coastal region's ice cream culture has roots in traditional Udupi eateries and was popularized by early pioneers like Shetty Ice Cream in the 1960s.

Mangaluru residents consume ice cream year-round, including during monsoon rains, setting it apart from the rest of India.
