Meghalaya records 58% monsoon rainfall deficit, IMD raises concern

Meghalaya recorded a 58% monsoon rainfall deficit from June 1 to July 31, receiving 681.5mm against the normal 1,626.2mm, placing it in the IMD's 'Deficient' category.

In July 2026, the state saw an 83% shortfall, with just 3.4mm of rainfall versus the normal 20.1mm, classified as 'Large Deficient'.

Ten of Meghalaya's 11 districts experienced below-normal precipitation; the worst-affected were West Jaiñtia Hills (78% deficit), West Khasi Hills (71%), and West Garo Hills (69%).

South West Khasi Hills was the sole exception, receiving 1,917.8mm against a normal of 1,049.5mm, an 83% surplus classified as 'Large Excess'.

The IMD has forecast normal to above-normal rainfall over Northeast India in August, but concerns persist over agriculture, drinking water supply, and reservoir storage.
