14 years later, Panchkula court acquits ex-UT police inspector, three others in Fake IPS officer case

An additional sessions court in Panchkula acquitted four accused, including former Chandigarh Police inspector Tarsem Singh Rana, in a fake IPS officer case, setting aside their 2018 conviction.

The other acquitted are Naresh Kumar, Ravinder Kumar of Bhiwani, and Swaran Singh of Mohali.

The case began with an FIR on August 31, 2012, at Chandimandir police station under IPC sections including cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, impersonation, and Arms Act offences.

Kumar Aman, alias Aman Kumar, posed as an IPS officer; the group was intercepted at Ramgarh Chowk with a revolver, dummy AK-47, forged ID cards, uniforms, and a red beacon.

The court allowed appeals noting key witnesses turned hostile.
