SC asks Calcutta HC to hear Abhishek Banerjee’s foreign travel plea urgently

Supreme Court requested Calcutta High Court to urgently hear Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's plea for permission to travel abroad for eye treatment.

The application was pending before the Calcutta High Court with no date fixed; SC disposed of Banerjee's petition after his counsel cited the need for medical travel.

Banerjee's travel restriction stems from a Calcutta HC order in a criminal case over an alleged provocative speech, requiring prior court permission for leaving India.

The Calcutta HC had earlier directed Banerjee to undergo a medical exam at Kolkata's SSKM Hospital before considering travel for treatment.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court the application was in the monthly cause list, leading the SC to request a specific date for hearing.
