‘National disgrace’: Shashi Tharoor attacks Centre over ILO gig workers vote

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor called the Indian government's abstention from an ILO vote on gig workers a 'national disgrace'.

The ILO Convention on 'decent work in the Platform Economy' aims to set minimum standards for gig workers.

Tharoor noted that Indian employers and workers voted in favour of the convention.

He urged the government to endorse the standards and adopt them in Indian law.

Over 31.78 crore unorganised workers, including gig and platform workers, are registered on the e-Shram portal as of July 14, 2026.
