Orcas filmed tearing apart giant Sunfish with new hunting technique

Orcas in the Gulf of California were filmed using a coordinated ramming technique on giant sharp-tail sunfish.

The technique involves one orca holding the sunfish by its tail while another rams it at high speed, breaking the body into thousands of pieces.

The behavior was observed in July 2024 and September 2025, more than a year apart.

Scientists believe the technique may help younger orcas feed more easily on the smaller fragments.

It is also possible the orcas were playing with their food, a known behavior for the species.
