100-million-year-old ichthyosaur's last meal found; bite marks implicate giant Kronosaurus

Neutron and synchrotron scans of a 100-million-year-old ichthyosaur fossil from Queensland uncovered fish, cephalopods, and a pterosaur in its stomach.

The fossil, nicknamed 'Bag of Bones' or 'B.O.B.', was found in 2019 near Richmond, Queensland, and measured 6-7 metres long.

Crushing bite marks on the fossil suggest the ichthyosaur was attacked or scavenged by the giant marine predator Kronosaurus queenslandicus.

The study, published in Gondwana Research with support from ANSTO, reveals details of Australia's ancient Eromanga Sea food web.
