Mumbai: BMC Proposes ₹2,241-Crore Afcons Contract For Water Tunnel Linking Manori Desalination Plant To City

BMC proposes awarding a ₹2,241-crore contract to Afcons Infrastructure Ltd for a water tunnel linking the Manori desalination plant to Mumbai's water distribution network in Kandivali.
The 7.175-km tunnel will run from Manori to Charkop Municipal Garden and Mahavir Nagar, with a 2.5-metre diameter, excavated 104–128 metres underground using two TBMs.
The tunnel is designed for 400 MLD capacity, but first-phase mechanical/electrical systems will handle 200 MLD, matching the desalination plant's initial output.
The tunnel is scheduled for completion in 45 months (by early 2030), ahead of the desalination plant's 48-month timeline, to ensure timely integration.
Afcons was the lowest bidder, quoting 1.82% below BMC's ₹1,577-crore estimate; the proposal awaits Standing Committee approval.
