Lovlina assured of medal, Sonowal upsets world champ in bowls

Lovlina Borgohain was assured of a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games without competing, due to a bye in the women's 75kg boxing quarter-finals after only five entrants registered.

Putul Sonowal upset Canada's Ryan Bester, the reigning outdoor World Bowls Championship gold medallist, in the men's singles Section D opener at his first CWG.

Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki defeated Malta in a tiebreak in the women's pairs first round match.

Borgohain will face Tuvalu's Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki on July 31 for a place in the final.

Lawn bowls events for this edition are held indoors with a faster format, a first in CWG history.
