HT archive: JP steps up drive against Indira at mega Delhi rally

Jayaprakash Narayan held a massive rally at Delhi's Ramlila Ground on June 25, 1975, intensifying his campaign against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Narayan urged Supreme Court Chief Justice AN Ray not to hear Indira Gandhi's appeal against the Allahabad high court verdict convicting her of electoral malpractice.

Narayan argued that Ray's appointment after superseding three senior judges would cast doubt on his judgment in Gandhi's case.

He called for Gandhi's resignation, citing the high court's findings of corrupt practices and her lack of honesty and incorruptibility.

Narayan praised the 'Young Turks' in Congress for opposing Gandhi and urged other Congressmen to follow their example.
