Why does indigestion increase in monsoon? Gastroenterologist Dr Bhaskar Nandi explains and shares preventive measures

Air Cmde (Dr) Bhaskar Nandi explains that monsoon indigestion results from increased humidity, fluctuating temperatures, and higher risk of food and water contamination.
Dr Nandi notes that humid weather can slow digestion, causing bloating and heaviness, while reduced physical activity contributes to sluggish digestion and constipation.
The monsoon season may make the immune system more vulnerable to gastrointestinal infections, leading to food poisoning or gastroenteritis from contaminated food or water.
To prevent indigestion, Dr Nandi advises consuming freshly cooked, hot meals; washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly; and choosing cooked vegetables over raw salads, especially when eating outside.
Dr Nandi recommends drinking only clean, filtered, or boiled water during the rainy season.
