Raji Doshi, a 12-year-old from Connecticut, designed a system using algae and natural calcium (aragonite) buffers to reduce ocean acidification.

Her project is a finalist in the Young Scientist Lab competition, where she competes for the $25,000 grand prize.

The system uses algae to absorb CO2 during photosynthesis and calcium buffers to increase water alkalinity, countering acidification.

Ocean acidification makes it harder for corals, shellfish, and other marine organisms to build shells and skeletons.

Her project investigates combining algae and calcium buffers to create healthier conditions for marine ecosystems.
