US imposes 10% ‘forced labour’ tariff on India under Section 301 investigation

The US imposed a 10% tariff on imports from India under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, following a forced labour investigation.

India's rate is lower than the originally proposed 12.5% tariff, placing it on par with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and others.

Tariffs were applied to 60 countries accounting for over 99% of US imports for failing to prohibit and enforce restrictions on forced labour goods.

The action, announced by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, replaces a temporary 10% global tariff that expired the same week.

India is also under a separate Section 301 investigation into alleged excess manufacturing capacity.
