IIT Guwahati student dies in Brahmaputra drowning, another rescued: Police

A third-year BTech student of IIT Guwahati died after falling into the Brahmaputra near Lathia Bagicha Ghat on August 2, 2026.

Another student was rescued within about 20 minutes by local sailors and the NDRF.

The deceased student was from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

IIT Guwahati issued a statement expressing grief and said police are investigating the incident.

The institute will strengthen safety advisories cautioning against visiting the river during the monsoon.
