15 elephants suspected to have died after eating pesticide-sprayed tomatoes near Kenya's Amboseli National Park

elephants died in southern Kenya near Amboseli National Park between June 24 and July 24, 2026.

Preliminary tests detected cyanide in tissue samples, suggesting ingestion of pesticide-contaminated tomatoes from nearby farms.

Deaths occurred in Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Group Ranch, part of the Amboseli ecosystem along the Kenya-Tanzania border.

The Kenya Wildlife Service is investigating whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional.

Authorities warn that livestock in the area could also be at risk from the contamination.
