Zohran Mamdani's luxury home tax post sparks backlash

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on X celebrating the new pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes worth over $5 million.

Mamdani said notification letters have been sent to property owners about the tax, which he argues will fund public services.

Republican Sen. Mike Lee and others criticized the tax as confiscatory and warned it could drive wealthy residents and investment away.

GOP strategist Mehek Cooke claimed the tax could lead to empty units, harming working-class doormen and supers.
