Cubs reliever Trent Thornton hoping to avoid IL after he was struck on heel by comebacker

Cubs reliever Trent Thornton is day to day with a bruised left heel after being struck by a comebacker from Riley Greene at 108.9 mph.

A CT scan showed no fractures, and Thornton played catch before the game against the Detroit Tigers.

Thornton credited his Mizuno cleats with a hard shell at the heel for helping avoid serious injury.

Fellow reliever Phil Maton went on the 15-day IL for the third time this season with right knee tendinitis and received a platelet-rich plasma injection.

Utilityman Matt Shaw was placed on the IL on June 29 with a sprained left hand and may start swinging a bat soon.
