Saudi Arabia is building a giant car-free region beside the Red Sea, but its futuristic city plans have changed
in5points
Saudi Arabia's NEOM project spans 26,500 sq km along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba.
The Line, a car-free city 170 km long in mirrored towers, has been scaled back after construction was suspended in late 2025.
NEOM includes developments like Oxagon, Trojena, Sindalah, and Magna, part of the Vision 2030 plan.
The original plan for The Line aimed to house 9 million people with no cars and 20-minute high-speed rail across its length.
Only 2.4 km of foundation work was completed, and population targets have been reduced as Saudi Arabia shifts to a phased approach.
