Rescue on as 27 workers trapped in Sikkim tunnel after landslides

workers were trapped inside an under-construction tunnel of NHPC's Teesta Stage VI hydroelectric project in Sikkim after landslides on July 21, 2026.

The incident occurred at Samardung in Namchi district around 3:40 pm.

Initially 43 workers were inside the tunnel; 16 managed to escape safely.

workers from Patel Engineering LTD and 6 from NHPC were at the site; two rescue workers also got trapped.

Three rescue attempts failed due to bad weather and terrain conditions.
