Broad Peak: The 8,051-metre ‘accessible eight-thousander' mountain in Gilgit-Baltistan known for avalanche risks

Broad Peak, the world's 12th-highest mountain, rises 8,051 meters in the Karakoram range on the border between Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and China's Xinjiang.

British explorer Sir Martin Conway named it in 1892, comparing its 1.5-km summit ridge to the Breithorn in the Swiss Alps.

The mountain was formed by the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates, consisting of plutonic granite and metamorphic rock.

An avalanche struck on July 30, 2026, killing 10 climbers including renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja; four bodies recovered so far.

Broad Peak is considered more accessible than K2, but its 1.5-km summit ridge and avalanche risks make it dangerous.
