US airport arrest: Immigration concerns rise as ICE detains Johns Hopkins scholar with valid work permit till 2029
ICE detained Johns Hopkins researcher Fatima Ameaka at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Tuesday for overstaying a visa that expired June 13, 2024.
Ameaka held a valid employment authorization document allowing her to work in the U.S. until 2029 and had a pending asylum application.
DHS stated Ameaka would remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

Ameaka is a Fulbright Scholar with a doctorate in pharmacy, works at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and conducts research on infectious disease outbreak responses, including measles.
