China’s fresh Larung Gar demolitions assault on Tibetan identity: CTA

The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) reported that demolitions at Larung Gar Buddhist Academy began around July 13, 2026.

At least six residences had been torn down by July 15, with plans to destroy an estimated 1,060 quarters belonging to monks and nuns.

The CTA linked the demolitions to China's new 'Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress', implemented on July 1, 2026, describing it as a coercive legal weapon for forced assimilation.

Previous demolitions in 2001 and 2016–2017 destroyed over 7,000 monastic dwellings and forcefully evicted thousands of residents.

The Tibetan government-in-exile described the demolitions as an assault on Tibetan identity and a dangerous escalation in China's systematic suppression.
