Gastroenterologist shares top tip to prevent cyclospora infection

in5points
Cyclospora outbreak has infected over 3,000 people across more than 30 US states, linked by Michigan health officials to lettuce and salad greens.
Gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Salhab warns that cyclospora is microscopic and washing, vinegar, or baking soda are not reliable to remove it.
Most affected foods include bagged salad mixes, fresh cilantro or basil, raspberries, and snow peas.
Cooking food to at least 158°F is the most reliable way to kill cyclospora; frozen or canned foods and dried herbs are safer alternatives.
Symptoms like explosive diarrhea, pain, and cramps begin two to seven days after infection; hydration, electrolytes, and calling a doctor are advised.
