Cyclospora outbreak: 2 people die in Michigan; know symptoms, know to stay safe and more

Two people in Michigan died in connection with the multistate Cyclospora outbreak, the first known deaths linked to the illness in the US.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite causing cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness usually spread through contaminated fresh produce or water.

Michigan reported 11,234 cases, including 193 hospitalizations; nationwide, over 18,000 cases have been identified this season.

Contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms is the likely source; Taco Bell removed the product, and Taylor Fresh Foods withdrew affected lettuce.

Symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and dehydration; washing produce does not eliminate the risk.
