Tahir Hussain gives first public reaction after being sentenced to life in prison

Tahir Hussain, former AAP councillor, was sentenced to life imprisonment along with four others for the murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Hussain said he will challenge the conviction and life sentence in the Delhi High Court.

The Delhi Police had sought the death penalty, but the court awarded life imprisonment, stating the prosecution failed to prove the convicts were beyond reform.

The prosecution alleged Sharma was unarmed, surrounded by a mob, assaulted, and dragged with a cloth tied around his neck before his body was dumped in a drain.

The court sentenced Hussain, Shah Alam, Mehtab, Gul Firoz, and Mohammad Riyan after hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment.
