{Punjab monsoon session} Aug 3 to 10 Don’t pass amendments sans consensus: Takht to Sikh MLAs
The Akal Takht issued letters to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhawan and all Sikh MLAs urging them not to pass amendments to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 without consensus.
The letters were issued on the directions of acting jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, a day after the Akal Takht rejected the Punjab government's response to objections regarding the law.
The letters ask legislators to avoid amendments during the assembly session from August 3 to 10 until consensus is reached with the Akal Takht and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
The government enacted the law without consulting the Takht, SGPC, or Panth, and its response accepted only one of the objections, defending others by referencing proposed rules.
The anti-sacrilege law, passed on April 13, 2026, imposes life imprisonment and fines up to ₹20 lakh for sacrilege involving Guru Granth Sahib, but has sparked backlash from clergy and Panthic bodies.
