'Police showed respect for accused Sena corporator': Bombay HC on probe into doctors' assault case

Bombay High Court criticized police for showing 'favourable treatment' to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, accused of assaulting doctors at a hospital.

The court noted police allowed Mhatre to appear via video conference for remand, calling it a 'rare respect' for an accused.

The court directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the concerned zone to take over the probe and submit a status report by July 31.

Mhatre and his aides allegedly assaulted doctors at a civic hospital in Dombivli, Thane district, on July 6 after relatives of a pregnant patient complained about treatment delay.

The court expressed surprise that an elected corporator who serves the public would assault the same people, and noted Mhatre checked into a hospital after judicial custody but left immediately upon bail.
