Japan earthquake aftermath: Woman dies of heat stroke in parked car; toll rises to 36

An elderly woman in her 70s died of heat stroke in a car that ran out of fuel, preventing air conditioning use, after the magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The earthquake killed at least 36 people and injured 105 others; two additional deaths are under investigation.

More than 9,000 people are in emergency shelters, while many others sleep in cars or outside due to privacy concerns.

Temperatures in Kumamoto city reached 36.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, raising fears of further heat-related illnesses.

The government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is rushing water, food, portable toilets, air conditioners, and partitions to evacuation centers.
