BMC tests prototype 'Manhole Rail Guard' in L Ward to improve safety during manhole maintenance.
The device is a square barrier (1m high, 1.5m wide) designed to enclose open manholes and prevent accidents.
Mayor Ritu Tawde and additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar inspected the prototype and suggested adding collapsibility, reflective strips, or flashing lights.
The pilot will assess effectiveness before deciding on a citywide rollout across Mumbai.
Two weight variants (225 kg and 80 kg) are available to suit different operational needs.
