HIV progress in 'real danger' as global funding plummets

Global funding for HIV fell by 18% in 2025, according to a UNAIDS report released at the 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro.

Beatriz Grinsztejn, president of the International AIDS Society, warned that donor funding has fallen so far, so fast that the most vulnerable are already paying the price.

UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima said the end of AIDS is no longer limited by science but by inequality, and urged politics to do its job.

International financing from European countries has fallen by 58% since 2011, while the US still provides 74% of donor government funding despite cuts.

Domestic funding in developing countries rose by 4% but represents only nearly 60% of the total HIV response, and many low-income African countries depend on overseas aid for 90% of their HIV response.
