‘Majority of liver failure patients in PGIMER due to hepatitis A’: Doctors

Acute liver failure patients admitted to PGIMER's Liver ICU in the last few years are mostly due to hepatitis A, according to Dr. Madhumita Premkumar.

PGIMER receives 800 to 1000 patients annually with chronic viral hepatitis (HBV and HCV) at its outpatient liver clinic.

Hepatitis A and E spread through contaminated food and water (feco-oral route) and can cause acute liver failure.

Hepatitis B and C cause chronic infections that can lead to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and liver cancer.

Hepatitis A cases have presented with prolonged jaundice and itching, sometimes requiring steroids or plasma exchange, per Dr. Nipun Verma.
