7 years on, VVCMC yet to implement NEERI-IIT suggestions to prevent flooding

Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has not implemented NEERI-IIT recommendations to prevent flooding for 7 years after the 2018 floods.

Four NEERI-IIT reports recommended building 8-10 culverts and 3 holding ponds to strengthen drainage, but not a single point was implemented.

Flooding from July 4-9, 2026, reminiscent of 2018, resulted from extensive construction in Virar West's green belt, blocking natural drainage paths.

VVCMC officials say necessary works require at least ₹300 crore; they submitted a ₹117.19 crore proposal to the government, still under process.
