Marine habitat sculpture memorializes Kale Island

Kale Island in the Solomon Islands disappeared beneath rising seas in 2016, becoming one of the first documented islands lost to climate change-driven sea-level rise.

A life-size sculpture called The Solomon Siren now marks the site and is designed to become a living artificial reef, providing habitat for seabirds, coral, and marine life.

Since 2008, more than 26,000 people in the Solomon Islands have been displaced by rising waters, which have eroded coastlines and forced communities to relocate.
