No driver, not even a steering wheel: Amazon’s Zoox wins landmark US approval for robotaxis

Amazon-owned Zoox secured approval from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to commercially deploy up to 2,500 purpose-built robotaxis without steering wheels or pedals over the next two years.

The NHTSA exemption allows Zoox to operate its electric carriage-style robotaxi with inward-facing seats and a top speed of 75 mph, but the vehicles cannot be sold to the public.

NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison stated that Zoox's automated driving system exceeds equivalent performance requirements of compliant vehicles.
