Bill to provide statutory framework to Indian Statistical Institute introduced in LS

The Indian Statistical Institute Bill, 2026, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday by Union Minister Rao Indrajit Singh.

The bill seeks to replace the Indian Statistical Institute Act, 1959, and incorporate the institute as a 'body corporate'.

It establishes a Board of Governors as the principal policy executive body, headed by a chairperson, accountable to the central government.

An Academic Council, headed by the institute's director, will be the principal academic body, including all full-time professors and faculty.

The President of India will serve as the Visitor of the institute.
