Donald Trump’s food-stamp overhaul is beginning to bite

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), passed without Democratic votes, is projected to cut federal SNAP spending by about a fifth over a decade.

SNAP enrollment has already fallen by 12%, or around 5 million people, due to the reforms.

The law shifts SNAP operating costs to states, increasing their share from half to three-quarters starting October.

Work requirements for SNAP have been extended to more recipients including veterans and homeless people, causing some to lose eligibility.

For the first time, the federal government will no longer pay the full cost of SNAP benefits, giving states incentive to reduce enrollment.
