UAE man who killed woman with scissors gets fresh hearing as top court overturns death sentence

The UAE Federal Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of a man convicted of murdering a woman with scissors, citing inadequate protection of his right to a proper defence.

The case was sent back to the Court of Appeal for a fresh hearing before a different judicial panel.

The accused had argued he lacked intent to kill, acted under provocation, and requested a psychiatric evaluation, but the appeal court failed to adequately address these arguments.

The Supreme Court emphasized that all death sentences in the UAE undergo automatic review and that courts must provide reasoned decisions on defence submissions.
