BSE Sensex rose 166.15 points (0.21%) to 78,805.18, while NSE Nifty50 slipped 159.25 points (0.64%) to 24,615.00.
The divergence between Nifty and Bank Nifty spot and futures values was caused by the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism rolled out on August 3.
CAS was introduced under SEBI guidance to improve transparency and strengthen price discovery in the cash market.
Rupee rose 3 paise to 95.34 against the US dollar in early trade.
Lower crude oil prices and sustained foreign fund inflows supported Indian financial assets.
