Indonesia Earthquake: 5.1 Magnitude Tremors Rock Northern Sumatra And Phuket, No Tsunami Risk

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Sumatra’s Aceh region, felt in Phuket’s high-rise buildings on Wednesday morning.

No damage or tsunami risk was reported; Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom confirmed there was no tsunami threat.

The epicentre was 36 km northeast of Gayo Lues, 32 km from Phuket, at a depth of 9 km, detected at 11:18 am by Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division.

In Gayo Lues, the strongest shaking shattered glassware and swayed large objects; Indonesia’s BMKG recorded one 3.8-magnitude foreshock and two aftershocks (largest 4.3).

Thai and Indonesian officials continued monitoring aftershocks; 19 tsunami warning towers in Phuket were assessed with no risk found.
