Violinist and composer L Subramaniam: A road in father’s name in Sri Lanka is a tribute to his musical legacy
L Subramaniam was conferred Sri Lanka’s Highest State Tribute and inaugurated the Violin Maestro Lakshminarayana Road in Jaffna, named after his father Vaidyanatha Lakshminarayana.
The road is located next to Ramanathan College in Jaffna, where his father taught from 1935, and across from the North Ceylon Sangeetha Sabha culture centre.
His father developed violin techniques while living in Sri Lanka in the '30s to '50, transforming the violin from accompanying to a solo instrument.
Subramaniam performed at Nallur Kandaswamy Devasthanam temple, where he gave his first stage performance at age six, before the road's inauguration.
His father later headed the instrumental section at Radio Ceylon in Colombo in 1953, creating a broadcasting system for classical music.
