New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced city-owned grocery stores will sell essential items 30% below typical retail prices.
Discounted items include all fresh produce, meat and seafood, plus 20 other essentials like cheese, milk and bread.
The average family could save up to $90 per month by shopping at these stores.
Two locations identified: La Marqueta in Manhattan and The Peninsula in The Bronx; first store expected to open in Bronx by end of 2027.
Stores will not sell hot food, beer, or cigarettes to avoid competing with private grocers.
